How To Look After Your Fishing Worms

To get the best out of your fishing experience, looking after your worms well is important. Maintaining your worm colony at home means you’ll have a supply of worms that you can use on each fishing trip. It means you don’t have to throw away worms that don’t get used on a trip, and you’ll save money. Plus, they’re easy to care for, and can multiply if looked after correctly.
In this post, we’ll be looking at the best ways to store and feed your live fishing worms, so you can get the best out of each fishing trip.

Environment
How and where you store your fishing worms depends on the amount you have. If you have a small amount of worms that you know you’ll be using up within a month, you can store them in the fridge for a short period of time.

If, on the other hand, you have a large collection of over 100 to a thousand worms, you’ll need to keep them in a plastic box or bucket, to help them last as long as possible. Avoid using a see-through box, as worms prefer to be in the dark. Light can cause them to become upset and confused.

Fill the box with soil and include any paper shreds that came with your worms in the post.

Feeding your worms
Keeping your fishing worms happy and healthy doesn’t take a lot of work, as they only need to be fed once a week. Whatever food you choose, it needs to be sprinkled evenly across the top layer. Beware of overfeeding your worms. It’s advisable to not feed them again until the rest of the food has been eaten. Overfeeding worms can cause them to die.

You can get powdered worm food from most fishing shops. However, they will also eat leftover scraps of fruit and vegetable peels, and even coffee grounds. Enough scraps to fill a small yoghurt pot is all they need per week.

Changing the soil
It’s recommended that you change the soil in your worm box every three to six months. This is because it can become contaminated with waste, making the worms sick. Make sure the new soil is kept moist. Before feeding the worms, they will need time to readjust to the new soil.
